Who is K. Annamalai?
Born on June 4th, 1984, to Kuppusamy and Parameshwari in Karur, Annamalai grew up with strong values of honesty, hard work, and serving others. He started his education with an engineering degree, then went on to get an MBA from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-Lucknow), setting the stage for his future endeavors. This stage was a stepping stone for his career.
Annamalai’s journey into public service began with his exceptional performance in the civil service examination, which led to him becoming an officer in the esteemed Indian Police Service (IPS) within the Karnataka cadre. During his time in the service, he earned recognition like the ‘Esprits-De-Corps’ Award and the Sangay Lhaden Shenga Award during his training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).
K. Annamalai’s Journey as an IPS Officer
As an IPS Officer, Annamalai held important positions across Karnataka, including as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Udupi and Chikkamagaluru Districts, and later as the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Bengaluru South. His leadership style, marked by resilience and a commitment to fairness, earned him the nickname ‘Singham anna,’ which reflected well upon his dedication to maintaining law and order.
Annamalai’s desire to understand others led him to study Islam during his time in Udupi. He wanted to bridge cultural gaps and dispel misunderstandings, so he immersed himself in learning about the Quran and Hadith with the help of religious scholars, showing his dedication to fostering harmony among different communities.
But it was a transformative trip to Kailash Mansarovar in 2018 that made Annamalai reflect deeply on his life’s purpose. This soul-searching journey led him to resign from the IPS service and start the We The Leaders Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to grassroots leadership and community development.
Prior to becoming the BJP state president in March 2020, Murugan served as the vice president of the national SC/ST commission and practiced law in the Madras High Court for a span of 15 years. Despite being a Dalit leader, he has not experienced success in electoral contests. In 2006, he faced defeat in his first election from the Sankari constituency, and more recently, he lost from Dharapuram, which is a seat reserved for Scheduled Castes. His campaign received support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
His Transition from IPS Officer to a Prominent BJP Leader
In 2019, Annamalai served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Bengaluru South when he decided to resign from the civil services. At that time, he had already earned the nickname ‘Singham’ in Karnataka, signifying his reputation as a tough cop.
In August 2020, Annamalai joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), driven by a desire to bring change to Tamil Nadu’s political scene. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the State President of BJP-Tamil Nadu, becoming the youngest person to hold such a position within the party. The BJP sees potential in the 37-year-old to attract more young people, especially with the upcoming local body elections later this year. Since 2019, Annamalai is the third leader to assume the top post in the BJP’s Tamil Nadu chapter. He succeeded Murugan, who took over six months after his predecessor Tamilisai Soundararajan was appointed as the governor of Telangana
